Our History

The Canton Corner Barbershop was opened in 2015, with the vision of a true old school Barbershop that specializes in classic barbering techniques and focused personal services, with the hopes of being the “go to” barbershop in the Canton neighborhood.

Owner, Lawrence Avara, has a long family history of Barbering in Maryland. His grandfather Vincezo Avara migrated from Italy in 1930 as a Master Barber, he opened his own shop that same year in downtown Baltimore. Lawrence’s father Simon Avara, also a Master Barber. In 1960 he went on to open two Barber School locations (International Academy of Hair & Avara’s Academy of Hair Design) , as well as serving on the Maryland State Board of Barbers and Cosmetologist.

Lawrence and Tina Avara continue to own and operate Avara’s Academy of Hair Design today with a 60 plus year history of training students in the field of Barbering.

Lawrence has worked as an educator for several product and equipment companies within the industry as well as serving on the Maryland Board of Barbers and Cosmetologist for 12 years.
